Eco Council Meeting – Switch Off Fortnight

Barningham CEVC Primary School Switch-Off Fortnight

Eco council met this week to discuss our Switch off Fortnight event, which we will be holding next week. Eco council will lead an assembly on Wednesday 16th November to inform the school about Switch off Fortnight. Some members of Eco council gave up their break to help sort resources for the event, ensuring each class has stickers, certificates and badges. We are also looking forward to letting the school know about the energy saving initiatives Eco Council will be running over the two weeks.

What is Switch off Fortnight?

The whole school is taking part in the Eco Schools Switch-Off Fortnight Campaign from 14th to the 27th November 2016.    Switch-Off Fortnight is a fantastic opportunity to get the whole school learning about energy and thinking about how we can cut down on the amount of energy we use both at school and at home. We want to make real and measurable improvements to the schools’ energy use and Switch-Off Fortnight is a fun and easy way to get the whole school interested in cutting carbon.

What will Barningham CEVC School do?

Eco Council will also give details of the two below initiatives we hope to run over the two weeks:

  • The Eco Council will be encouraging everyone to take part to see how much electricity can be saved. There will be one lesson a week (for the two-week period) of NO POWER HOUR where we will ask the teachers not to use projectors and everyone must try to use as little electricity as possible. All electrical appliances will have to be switched off when not in use. The class and class teachers can decide on a suitable lesson or to make a real impact we all turn off on the same day time, preferably Tuesday or Wednesday.
  • During Switch-Off Fortnight, the Eco Council will be holding a competition to find out which class is the most environmentally friendly. Eco Council members will be going around the school at break times to monitor which classes have their light and overhead projectors turned off. The winners will be announced afterwards and given a class plant.
