Visit to St Catherine’s College, Cambridge

On Monday our Y6 children went to Cambridge. We walked along the ‘backs’, across Clare Bridge and then rested in front of the Senate House and King’s College Chapel. After a quick spot of science in the Fudge Shop (Do you know why they use marble as a table? – www.fudgekitchen.co.uk and a DT investigation of the Corpus Clock (How does it work? – www.corpus.cam.ac.uk) we entered the gates of St Catharine’s College –www.caths.cam.ac.uk/).

The sign on the door said ‘No visitors’ but we had, as one child proudly announced to the tourists at the gate, “VIP status!”.

The visit was designed to inspire our Y6 to wanting to consider going to university.
We were given a fascinating talk by Chris – a graduate of the college  – and then by a Vetinary Medicine student. Afterwards, Sam, a Medical student from Kent, took us on a tour of the college: chapel, cafe (bar), JCR (Junior Common Room), library (x 2), accomodation blocks, Sherlock courtyard…

At the beginning of the tour three pupils expressed an interest in going to university, but by the end everybody was excited! The children designed crests for their own colleges and quizzed the students about life as a university student. The children also got to try on black gowns.

Here are some of the comments expressed:

‘It was really interesting, because we got to look around the town’
‘It was one of the best experiences that I have ever had!’
‘I was fascinated about how much the students liked their college.’
‘I couldn’t believe how much history there was in Cambridge.’
‘I’m really excited to go to uni – I’d like to study to be a vet.’
‘It was a great chance for children to see how the university works – and it was really fun.’

On the way home we walked down the alleyways dripping with history and stories of inventions, research, questions and answers. We watched the punts bobbing on the cold river.

A fantastic day!
